Metro NY Chapter            

 

1955

-

Organizational meeting for Long Island held. Frederick C. Morgan, Secretary-Treasurer of American Association of Hospital Accounts, presided. Guest Speaker: Henry Sesan, Vice President, Blue Cross of New York.

1956

- Membership: 53  

1957

-

Long Island Chapter participated for the first time at National Institute in Bloomington IA. It  presented an “Illustrated General Ledger System.”

 

-

Charles G. Roswell, Director of Hospital Services Division, United Hospital Fund of New York, named first winner of Frederick C. Morgan Individual Achievement Aware.

 

-

Joseph Levi won first prize of “Tricks of Trade” contest at National Institute held in Bloomington, Indiana.

 

-

First AAHA Fellowship examination held and 19 certified as Fellows. Chapter’s first two Fellows: Joseph Levi and Sister Ruth Marion.

 

-

Long Island chapter, together with New Jersey and Philadelphia Chapters, sponsors Tri-Chapter Institute at Atlantic City.

1958

-

Long Island Chapter Board (President Joseph Levi) approved merger with New York City Group to form Metropolitan New York Chapter.

 

-

National charter issued to Metropolitan New York Chapter of AAHA, First President: Arthur Beeney.

1961

-

Chapter held its first Annual Institute. Attendance was 19, including members of the Associated Press. Program theme: “Money, Manpower, and Management for Benefit of Patients.” Proceedings of Institute published in August, 1961.

 

-

Chart of Accounts developed by the Chapter for Nassau-Suffolk hospital was accepted by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council.

Chapter has first two William G. Follmer Aware recipients: Raymond F. Mach and Joseph Levi.

 

-

Chapter member Harry O. Humbert installed as National AAHA President during 1961-62 program year.

1962

-

Chapter reached GLD Club for the first time. President is Joseph Levi.

 

-

National awarded the Chapter a certificate of “Notable Improvement in Chapter Services to Membership.”

 

-

Harry O. Humbert receives National AAHA Life Membership.

1966

-

First Chapter newsletter publication: NEWSCAST

1967

-

GLD Club reached for second time. Chapter declared winner of Graham L. Davis Award. President is Sister Catherine Marie.

 

-

Chapter commenced sponsorship of United Hospital Fund evening course program for hospital accounting and business office personnel.

 

-

Membership over 300.

1968

-

Chapter has first two Robert H. Reeves Award recipients: Joseph Levi and Frank B. Nicholson.

 

-

Special Recognition Award established by the Chapter. First recipient was John R. Walsh.

1969

-

GLD Club reached for third time.

 

-

HFMA-7 organized association of seven New York chapters for closer cooperation. First chairman was Morris J. Annunziato, FHFMA.

 

-

Chapter has first Frederick T. Muncie Aware recipient: Raymond F. Mach.

 

-

Chapter declared winner of national newsletter contest for its Newscast issued during 1968-69. Editor was John R. Walsh.

 

-

First HFMA Certified Manager of Patient Accounts (CMPA) examination held, and 22 certified. Chapter’s first three CMPAs were James M. Duffy, Helen Fischman, and Peter Siriani.

1970

-

GLD Club reached for fourth time.

 

-

Joseph Levi receives National HFMA Life Membership.

 

-

New York State chapters educational project presented by Fellows of the Metropolitan New York Chapter at New York State University, Albany.

1971

-

GLD Club reached for fifth time.

 

-

GLD Club reached for sixth time.

 

-

Russell A. Caruana, FHFMA, named winner of the Second HFMA Annual Article Aware.

1974

-

GLD Club reached for seventh time.

 

-

A Guide to Organize the Hospital’s Fiscal Services Division with Job Descriptions for Key Functions published by HFMA, Chicago. Author was Russell A. Caruana, FHFMA.

1975

-

GLD Club reached for the eighth time.

 

-

Chapter celebrates 20th anniversary. Membership exceeds 700.

 

-

William Freitag, CPA, FHFMA, received HFMA Board of Directors Award.

1976

-

GLD Club reached for the ninth time.

 

-

Membership exceeds 800.

 

-

Ryan Memorial Award established in lieu of Special Recognition Award.

 

-

First recipient was George Bolint, President 1968-69.

1977

-

GLD Club reached for the tenth time.

 

-

Chapter declared winner of National newsletter contest for Newscast issued during 1976-77. Editors were John Rumsey and Peter S. Levitan.

 

-

Chapter’s first “roasting” testimonial dinner held. Roastee was Edward Messier.

 

-

Joseph Levi declared runner-up in HFMA’s Cost Effectiveness Contest.

1978

-

GLD Club reached for the eleventh time.

 

-

Chapter declared winner of Sister Mary Gerald League. Total points accumulated under Graham L. Davis Award scoring were 620.

 

-

Joseph Levi receives the HFMA Frederick C. Morgan Individual Achievement Award.

 

-

Membership exceeds 1,000.

1979

-

GLD Club reached fork the twelfth time.

 

-

Chapter was named runner-up in Sister Mary Gerald League.

 

-

Membership exceeds 1,100.

 

-

Chapter declared winner of National newsletter contest for sixth time for Newscast issued during 1978-79. Editor was Daniel Casey.

 

-

National HFMA selected Chapter as the “Blue Ribbon” winner for publishing best Plan for Membership Service for 1978-79 in the Gerald League.

1980

-

GLD Club reached for the thirteenth time.

 

-

Chapter celebrates 25th Anniversary.

 

-

National HFMA awarded Chapter Special Recognition Award for Educational Programs.

1981

GLD Club reached for the fourteenth time.

 

-

Chapter wins National newsletter contest for the seventh time with Newscast. Editor was Vincent R. Raab, CPA, FHFMA.

 

-

Membership reaches 1,300.

1982

GLD Club reached for the fifteenth time.

1983

-

Annual Institute renamed to Memorialize Joseph A. Levi.

 

-

GLD Club reached for the sixteenth time.

1984

-

Establishment of the Joseph A. Levi Memorial Fund.

GLD Club reached for the seventeenth time.

1985

GLD Club reached for the eighteenth time.

Membership exceeds 1,400.

Chapter awarded first prize for Newscast.

GLD Club reached for the nineteenth time.

Membership exceeds 1,500.

Ted Meroe, CMPA and Theodore J. Seiter, Jr. FHFMA, appointed to the National HFMA Matrix.

Chapter awarded Honorable Mention for Outstanding Achievement in National’s Membership Service Plan Contest.

Chapter’s Educational Programs approved by New York State for CPA continuing education credits.

1988

GLD Club reached for the twenty-first time.

Theodore J. Seiter, Jr., FHFMA elected to National Board of Directors.

Peter J. Levitan appointed to the National HFMA Matrix.

Honorable Mention by National HFMA for Membership Services Plan.

Received Honorable Mention for Newscast by National HFMA.

1989

GLD Club reached for the twenty-second time.

Chapter awarded Honorable Mention for Outstanding Achievement in National’s Newsletter Contest. Editor: Paul Cheng, Jr. CMPA.

1990

GLD Club reached for the twenty-third time.

Chapter awarded first place prize for Newscast. Editor: Paul Cheng, Jr. CMPA.

Approval received for Metro N.Y. Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Educational Foundation (HFMEF).

 

-

Eileen Spano appointed to National HFMA Matrix; Richard Donoghue, CPA appointed to P&P Board; Ted Meroe, CMPA appointed to National HFMA nominating committee; Vincent Raab, FHFMA, CMPA appointed to Chairman’s Task Force on Certifications and Exams.

1991

-

GLD Club reached for the twenty-fourth time.

Chapter awarded Honorable Mention for Most Improved Chapter in Hottum League.

 

-

Marvin Tiger, CPA appointed Chapter Liaison Representative for Region 2.

1992

-

The Chapter reached the GLD Club for the twenty-fifth time.

 

-

The Chapter received recognition for having the greatest number of new recruits through National’s Member-Get-A Member campaign.  A $500 grant was awarded to the Chapter.

 

-

Several members of the Chapter were selected to serve on National committees. William E. Allison served on the National Matrix, Richard Cumberland, MCPA began his three year term on the Board of Examiners, Richard Donoghue, CPA continued his term on the Principles and Practices Board, and Paul Cheng, Jr., CMPA served on the HFM Journal Article Judging Committee.

1993

The Chapter reached the GLD Club for the twenty-sixth time.

 

-

The Chapter received recognition for the second consecutive year for the greatest number of new members through National’s Member-Get-A-Member campaign; a grant of $1,000 was awarded to the Chapter.

 

-

Several Members of the Chapter were selected to serve on National committees. Richard J. Henley, FACHE, FHFMA, served on the National Matrix; Richard Cumberland, CMPA was placed on the Board of Examiners; Richard J. Donoghue, CPA was appointed as Chair of the Principles and Practices Board; and Paul Cheng, Jr., CMPA served on both the HFM Journal Article Judging Committee and the Taskforce on Administrative Simplification and Reduction.

1994

The Chapter reached GLD Club for the twenty-seventh time.

 

-

The Chapter received the Membership Recruitment Award.

 

-

Chapter members were selected to serve on National committees, Richard J. Henley, FACHE, FHFMA was selected to serve on the National Board; Richard J. Donoghue, CPA continued as Chair of the Principles and Practices Board; Richard Cumberland, CMPA continued as a member of the Board of Examiners; and Paul Cheng, Jr. continued to serve on both the HFM Journal Article Judging Committee and the Task Force on Administrative Simplification and Reduction.

1995

The Chapter reached GLD Club for the twenty-eighth time.

The Chapter received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Newscast.

The Chapter reached GLD Club for the twenty-ninth time.

Had the largest number of Founders Awards presented, including one

 Medal of Honor.

Participated in the celebration of National HFMA 50th Anniversary with a production of historical pictorial video about our Chapter.

Participated in National HFMA Serves America with free seminars on Medicare issues for our elderly population.

 

-

Changed the name of the CMPA Society to the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) Society.

 

-

The Chapter received the Member-Get-A-Member Recruitment Award.

1998

-

Adopted David Chapter Management System.

 

-

Expanded Community Outreach Program through HFMA Services America.

 

-

Developed “Staff Level” Educational Programs for Members.

 

-

Co-Sponsored HFMA-7 and Joseph Levi Annual Institute with New Jersey and Hudson Valley Chapters.

 

-

Tom Egan Received National Life Membership.

 

-

Stephen A. Ryan Award presented to Dan Sisto, President - HANYS.

2001

The Chapter received the C. Henry Hottum Award for Educational Performance Improvement.

The Chapter received two Helen M. Yerger Special Recognition Awards for outstanding effort and excellence in multi-chapter projects:

 

 

*Downstate Mini-LTC with Hudson Valley, Northeastern New York and Puerto Rico Chapters

 

 

*Region 2 Fall Conference with Central New York, Hudson Valley, Northeastern New York, Rochester  Regional, Western New York and Puerto Rico Chapters.

Corporate Sponsorship reached the highest level in Chapter history.
